Have you ever known someone who seems to have known exactly what their purpose was in life from the moment they were born? This unique breed of people seem to know exactly the career path they want, they take the necessary steps to get there and everything seems to fall into place. Must be nice… For the rest of us common people, this is not the case.

At some point in everyone’s life, there are certain existential questions that plague our mind, “What is my purpose in life?” or “Why am I here?”. The thought of these questions can leave us feeling empty and directionless.

The reason why we have these questions is that we were created as eternal beings(Matthew 25:46) and God has placed eternity in our hearts(Ecclesiastes 3:11). This means that until we are living in the purpose of what we were designed for it will never completely satisfy.

This leads us to the question of this article, “What is MY purpose?”. First,  let’s define purpose. According to the Oxford dictionary it means “the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.” Many people envision a moment in their life when they stumble upon the career or life pursuit where they know with absolute certainty that this is their purpose. While I do believe people can feel that way towards a career or life pursuit, I believe that much of the pressures surrounding our expectations are cultural and that purpose, according to scripture, should be looked at much differently.

When people view purpose as I previously described it, it only covers a portion of their life and almost seems as though we could miss it if we aren’t careful. The Bible tells us that “the Lord directs the steps of the godly”(Psalm 37:23 NLT). This means that instead of viewing purpose as a single pursuit in your life, it is actually experienced in the moment by moment acts of obedience to God. When God nudges you to help a person in need and you respond accordingly, you are fulfilling God’s purpose for your life at that moment. When God wants you to share the Gospel with your neighbor and you obey, you are fulfilling God’s purpose for your life at that moment. When you work hard at a job or ministry, no matter how insignificant it may feel, and you do it in a way that glorifies God, you are fulfilling God’s purpose for your life at that moment.

If you live a life where your will is completely surrendered to God and He can influence your career path, relationship choices, commitment to serve others, willingness to forgive, etc., you will find yourself content in knowing that you are right where God wants you to be and He is guiding your steps.
